May 2025 Public Comment and Testimony on Proposed New York State Bar Exam

In the Spring of 2025, the New York State Court of Appeals announced that it would hold public hearings for its Advisory Committee tasked with identifying options on whether, and to what extent, the Court should adopt pre-or post-admission requirements supplementing the NextGen Bar Exam. You can read their notice here.

As part of UTB’s mission to democratize the legal profession and eliminate barriers to the full diversity of New Yorkers becoming attorneys, UTB submitted public comment and testified before the committee live on May 20, 2025. You can read UTB’s public comment on the right side of this page and download it here.

2022 Week of Action

Unlock the Bar is a coalition organizing for a democratized, liberatory legal profession. The path to reaching a just and equitable legal field includes the abolition of the discriminatory barriers to entering the legal profession created by the character and fitness process both here in New York and throughout the nation. Unlock the Bar held a Week of Action from February 16 to February 23, 2022! Over the course of the week, we held a Teach-In, Ban the Box in Higher Ed Panel and Strategy meeting, Tabling day, Community Hang, Twitter Storm, Day of Collective Rest, Character and Fitness Advocacy Coast to Coast Panel, and a Rally at the OCA!
